Recipe Macros Calculator

Add your ingredients and servings for the macronutrients in one portion and the energy split across them.

Raw and cooked foods are separate records. Pick the state you are putting in the recipe.

Search for your ingredients above, one at a time, then set the amount of each.

The whole recipe is divided by this number.

No figures yet

  1. Search for an ingredient above and pick the raw or cooked version you are using.
  2. Set how much of it goes in, in grams or another unit.
  3. Set how many servings the recipe makes, and the figures appear here.

Nothing is worked out until at least one ingredient is added, so you never see a made up number.

Reference and detail

Grams first, percentages second

The gram figures per serving are the measurement. The energy split is calculated from them at 4 kcal per gram of protein and carbohydrate and 9 kcal per gram of fat, and describes this recipe only.

No targets, by design

This page reports what is in the food you entered. It does not suggest what anyone's macros should be, because that depends on personal circumstances a cooking calculator knows nothing about.

How these figures are worked out

Values come from the official UK food composition dataset published on GOV.UK, used unchanged. Figures are estimates based on that data and the ingredients and quantities you enter, and real values vary between products, brands and preparation methods. Read the full method.

Questions and answers

Questions about recipe macros

What are macros in a recipe?

A shorthand for the three macronutrients: protein, carbohydrate and fat. This page reports how many grams of each a serving of your recipe contains, and what share of the energy each one provides.

How is the energy split between macros calculated?

Using the standard energy factors: 4 kcal per gram of protein, 4 kcal per gram of carbohydrate and 9 kcal per gram of fat. Each figure is expressed as a percentage of the energy those three provide in this recipe.

Why does the macro energy not exactly match the calorie figure?

The published energy value for a food is measured, while the macro split is reconstructed from the three macronutrients using round factors. Fibre, alcohol and rounding account for the small gap between the two.

Does this tool tell me what my macros should be?

No. It describes what is in the food you entered and nothing else. What anyone should eat depends on personal circumstances, and that is a question for a qualified professional rather than a cooking calculator.
