Reference and detail
Which cup should I use?
A US cup is 240 ml, an old UK cup is 284 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml. Most modern recipes online use the US cup. If a recipe does not say, assume US cups unless it is an older British book.
Why weight beats volume
Weighing is more accurate than measuring by volume, especially for flour. If your recipe gives cups and you own scales, convert it once and weigh from then on.
Questions and answers
Questions about general cooking measurement conversion
What's the difference between this converter and the cups-to-grams calculator?
This tool converts plain units of weight, volume and length (grams to ounces, millilitres to pints, and so on) without reference to any particular ingredient.
Converting cups (a volume) into grams (a weight) needs to know what's in the cup, so use the dedicated cups-to-grams calculator for that instead.
Which cup size does this converter assume?
Most modern online recipes use the US cup. Older British recipes sometimes use an imperial cup instead, which is a different size, so check the recipe's origin if a conversion looks off.
Is it worth converting a whole recipe to metric before cooking?
It's usually worth it once, especially if your scales and jugs are metric, converting each ingredient in turn avoids mixing units mid-recipe, which is where mistakes creep in.
